75 Years of
Bank Independent History

Bank Independent was started 75 years ago to serve the Leighton community. See below on how we now serve more than just one community.

1947
 
The Bank of Leighton is founded by a group of farmers and local business and community leaders with capital of $25,000.
1965
 
Our Sheffield office is opened, and the Bank is renamed First Colbert Bank.
1967
 
First Colbert moves from a state to a national-charter and moves our headquarters to Sheffield, becoming First Colbert National Bank.
1975
 
First Colbert Chairman Edward F. Mauldin leads a group of investors, including many First Colbert shareholders, to charter The Bank of Florence, operating out of our Pine Street location, while First Colbert continues to expand in Colbert County.
1978
 
First Colbert becomes the largest independent bank in Colbert County with 26% of the $130 million commercial bank deposits in the market.
1982
 
First Colbert and The Bank of Florence merge to form Bank Independent following a change in regulation allowing banks to operate in contiguous counties.

1987
 
Bank Independent grows to over $100 million in total assets.
1993
 
Bank Independent surpasses $200 million in total assets.
1996
 
Bank Independent introduces ATMs, issues more than 3,000 check cards, and launches first website.
1999
 
Bank Independent surpasses $300 million in total assets.
2001
 
Internet Banking, including cash management, is introduced to Bank Independent customers.
2002
 
Total assets exceed $400 million.
2005
 
The Colonial Bank acquisition brings 17 new sales offices and $370 million in deposits, nearly doubling the Bank’s size overnight, and increasing our presence in our eastern markets.
2009
 
The bank purchases Decatur's Interstate Billing Service from Regions Bank, adding 87 employees and increasing assets to $955 million.
2011
 
The Bank achieves the $1 billion milestone in total assets.
2014
 
Bank Independent enters the Madison County market.
2018
 
Total assets surpass $1.5 billion.
2020
 
Bank Independent opens the Tiger Branch, our first student-run sales office at Deshler High School in Tuscumbia.
Into the Future
 
 
2021
 
Bank Independent breaks ground on a five-story office building located in Downtown Huntsville at 225 Holmes Avenue, which will house a sales office on the ground floor and office space for our Madison County team on the fifth floor.
